Derry Youth Community
The vocation of the Derry Youth Community is service, inspired by Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.
The Derry Diocesan Youth Community aims to answer the call of Vatican II when it says:
The young should become the first apostles of the young, in direct contact with them, exercising the apostolate by themselves among themselves, taking account of their social environment.
The community is inspired by what Pope Benedict XVI said in St Peter's Square on 24th April 2005:
Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything. When we give ourselves to him, we receive a hundredfold in return. Yes, open, open wide the doors to Christ - and you will find true life. Amen.
The Derry Youth Community respond to the call to service by:
Evangelising young people in the Diocese of Derry
Encouraging young people into deeper relationship with Jesus
Bringing them more fully into the life of the Catholic Church
Doing School Retreats
Doing School Missions that are in association with the feeder parishes
Doing parish presentations
Living in community
Being centred on the Eucharist
Reflecting on their vocation
Caring in particular for the weak and the vulnerable
The Structure of the community
The community is founded by and always accountable to the Bishop of Derry
The Circle of Care Group guides the community through support, reflection and management. This group is appointed by the Bishop of Derry.
The community leader has responsibility for the day to day life and work of the community.
The community facilitator trains the young people for retreat work; organises School Retreats; gives school retreats with the young people; liaises with the Co-ordinator for Youth Ministry.
The core community is the group of young people who have committed for ten months.
